Culvert Renew® | HDPE Culvert Liner - Q & A

What It Is?

A helical-spiral HDPE culvert liner and pipe system manufactured by Poly Systems, Inc. for culvert rehabilitation and direct-buried HDPE pipe installations. 46 psi pipe stiffness per ASTM D‑2412 / F894, Thread‑Loc® interlocking joints, and 100‑year design life. Technical specifications cover sizing, wall profiles, and engineering data. For quick answers on fit, standards, and sizing, review the full culvert liner FAQ.

When to Specify It?

  • Deteriorating metal, concrete, or plastic culverts needing culvert relining
  • New culvert installations via open trench culvert installation or direct burial
  • DOT, municipal, rail, or drainage projects requiring ASTM specification‑grade HDPE
  • Sites where trenchless installation reduces cost, traffic disruption, or environmental impact

What engineers are saying

With proper prep, most culverts can be relined—avoids open‑cut headaches.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe
We have learned through experience that with the proper preparation most all culverts can be relined using this type of culvert and it saves us the headaches that we faced when we used the open cut method.

Common questions

Culvert Renew® | HDPE Culvert Liner FAQ

What is an HDPE culvert liner?

An HDPE culvert liner is a high-density polyethylene pipe inserted into a deteriorating culvert to restore structural integrity and extend service life. Culvert Renew® is a helical-spiral HDPE liner with interlocking Thread‑Loc® joints, 46 psi pipe stiffness per ASTM D-2412/F894, and a 100-year design life.

How does culvert relining compare to open trench replacement?

Culvert relining avoids full excavation by inserting a new HDPE liner into the existing host pipe. This reduces traffic disruption, lowers costs on most sites, and preserves the surrounding embankment. Open trench replacement may still be preferred when the host structure has fully collapsed or when alignment changes are needed.

What ASTM standards does Culvert Renew® meet?

Culvert Renew® meets ASTM D-2412 for pipe stiffness (46 psi) and ASTM F894 for polyethylene closed-profile wall pipe. It is also designed per AASHTO Section 18 for thermoplastic pipe structural requirements.

Can Culvert Renew® be direct-buried for new culvert installation?

Yes. Culvert Renew® can be direct-buried in open trench applications for new culvert installations where trenchless rehabilitation is not applicable. The same HDPE material, joint system, and pipe stiffness apply in both rehabilitation and direct-burial use cases.

What diameter range is available?

Culvert Renew® liners are manufactured in inside diameters from 10″ to 48″, sized to fit host pipes from 12″ to 120″. Contact engineering for sizing recommendations based on your host pipe material, diameter, and condition.
